Arts and
Crafts was a major English and American aesthetic movement which
evolved in the last years of the 19th and the early years of the
20th century. Inspired by the writings of John Ruskin, it was at its
height between approximately 1880 and 1910.
The Arts and Crafts Movement began primarily as a search for
authentic and meaningful styles for the 19th century and as a
reaction to the elaborate and heavy style of the Victorian era and
to the soulless machine-made production of the Industrial
Revolution.

The proponents of the Arts and Crafts movement were in favour of the
idea of the master craftsman, creating all the parts of an item of
furniture, and also playing a part in its assembly and finishing.
This was in stark contrast to the general trend of mass production
of the time.
It was a reformist movement that influenced British and American
architecture, decorative arts, cabinet making and crafts. There were
many innovative designers of the time, including William Morris and
Charles Rennie Mackintosh, and their work is very sought after
today.
We are constantly on the look out for interesting and unusual pieces
from this period and we try to provide as broad a range of items as
possible for our customers. |
