Art Nouveau

'Art Nouveau' as we know it came from the name given to a shop which was opened in Paris by Siegfried Bing called Maison de l’Art Nouveau. This shop displayed and sold objects made by well known designers of the day including Louis Conmfort Tiffany and so began the stylized Art Nouveau period.

Though Art Nouveau was at its height between 1892 to 1902, the first designs were evident as early as the 1880s. Art Nouveau made use of many technological innovations of the late 19th century, especially the broad use of exposed iron and large, irregularly shaped pieces of glass in architecture. By the start of the First World War, however, the highly stylized nature of Art Nouveau design lost popularity and a more streamlined modernism was evolving that was to become known as Art Deco.

Art Nouveau was influenced by the medievalist Arts and Crafts movement. It is characterised by dynamic and flowing lines inspired by organic forms. This unique style is very sought after today and we aim to source beautiful pieces from this era, these have included bureaus, tables and sets of dining chairs.
