Art Deco
|
The Art Deco
period began around 1920 continuing until the 1930’s.The initial
movement was called Style Moderne. The term Art Deco being a later
description.
It was widely considered to be an eclectic form of elegant and
stylish modernism, being influenced by a variety of sources. Among
these were the "primitive" arts of Africa and Egypt, as well as
Machine Age technology such as modern aviation, electric lighting,
and the skyscraper. These design influences were expressed by
geometric and jumbled shapes, which can be seen in many early
pieces. |
|
Corresponding to these influences, Art Deco is characterized by use
of materials such as aluminium, stainless steel, lacquer, and inlaid
wood. The bold use of stepped forms, and sweeping curved patterns,
and the sunburst motif are typical of Art Deco.
It was an opulent and glamourous style, and its lavishness is
attributed to reaction to the forced austerity imposed by the First
World War. Its rich, festive character fitted it for "modern"
contexts and today the clean simplistic lines of the Art Deco style
are immensely popular and would certainly enhance any home.
We stock a wide and ever changing range of Art Deco furniture, which
includes tables, cabinets, clocks, mirrors and pictures, as well as
